Glossary

The word ‘proactive’ comprises two parts: ‘pro’ and ‘active’. ‘Pro’ comes from Latin and stands for both ‘before’ and ‘for’; ‘active’ also comes from a Latin word, ‘activus’, meaning ‘taking action’. Putting both together gives us ‘proactive’, meaning ‘acting in advance’. If we take a proactive approach to the processes that take place in our lives and in organisations, we act in advance, in other words, we approach these processes with foresight and initiative. Taking a proactive approach therefore means to keep moving with a forward-looking focus.
